For busy modern families, a laundry has to be practical… but who says it can’t be pretty as well?
Take, for example, this recent laundry project for a new build home in Holland Park. Small on space but big on storage solutions and fabulously functional for this family of five.
Crisp, clean and cleverly chic, with gloss white cabinetry, snow coloured stone benchtops and a gorgeous grey patterned tile splashback adding personality and style. The elegant stainless steel curved flat profile handles, straightneck mixer tap and generous top mounted sink sparkle in this light-filled space. While the contrasting dark ceramic floor tiles are the perfect durable choice for the zone, continuing into the nearby powder room for a seamless visual transition.
Boasting 10 large cupboards, including pull out storage and a laundry chute opening from the upstairs stairwell (a genius resolve for getting dirty clothing and linens downstairs quickly!) this seemingly simple laundry design is ideal for the home’s floorplan. The closed front storage keeps everything from colour sorted laundry to cleaning products organised and concealed. If you can believe it, this actually makes the tedious task of doing laundry become quite satisfying since good design makes everything run more efficiently.
With the custom cabinetry all designated to run along the rear wall, there is plenty of space left in the laundry to comfortably extend an ironing board and even hang clothes on a rail as you go. A large sliding glass door to the exterior clothes line provides easy direct access – ideal for those days when the laundry basket is extra heavy.
One of the advantages of designing laundries, as opposed to other more shared entertaining spaces in your home, is that you can continue elements of the main cabinetry, such as the kitchen, but scale the design back to suit the function of the space. For example where you use an extra thick stone benchtop or feature cabinetry finishes/profiles, a standard 20mm stone thickness and single colour cabinetry or flat profile door can reference the overall design concept but reduce the cost significantly. Leaving you more left over to invest in quality high performance appliances or maybe even put towards that dream custom robe fit out.
When it comes to planning the perfect laundry design for your family and how you need this significant space to function on a daily basis, it’s important to discuss your ideas with an experienced cabinetry designer. Having someone who listens and knows the right questions to ask, can not only improve your overall laundry design and project outcome, but will have suggestions for saving you money or enabling you to balance your project budget in such a way that you invest in important areas while saving in others. It’s sometimes difficult to imagine, but for every great storage or space saving idea you may have discovered on Pinterest or the pages of your favourite magazines, there can be an evolution of that concept, or an entirely different approach you hadn’t considered that could better enhance your individual space and your user experience longterm.
